FIXED LADDERS This document applies to all machines (fixed or mobile) for which fixed access means are necessary. The purpose of this document is to define the general safety guidelines for access to machines referred to in EN ISO 12100-2. EN ISO 14122-1 sets out the recommendations concerning the appropriate selection of access means when the necessary access to the machine is not directly possible from the floor level or a platform. This document applies to fixed ladders which form an integral part of a machine. This document may also be applied to fixed ladders providing access to the parts of the building where the machine is installed, subject to the main function of this part of the building being to give access to the machine. This document also applies to ladders which are not permanently fixed onto the machine and which may be dismantled, moved aside or pivoted (mounted on a pivot). METAL LADDERS WITH OR WITHOUT SAFETY CAGE This document sets out the guidelines relating to the design, installation and testing of fixed metal ladders with or without a safety cage, used by maintenance, fulfilment and operating staff. This document concerns work places such as industrial buildings, industrial facilities, technical decks and premises, etc. It's also applicable to access means installed in buildings and facilities which house machinery. Within this context, it also covers the prevention of falls and excessive physical strain for individuals. This document does not supersede reason to use personal protection equipment against falls from heights. This document does not apply to pylons and masts, or to facilities and structures of the same nature, such as distribution, electrical energy transport, electrical traction or radio telecommunication facilities.
